M. Roberts; Thursday evening, June 14, 1883
Mrs. Roberts, wife of Sheriff R. M. Roberts, of whose dangerous illness mention was made in these columns yesterday, died at half past nine o'clock last night. Some months ago Mrs. Roberts was taken seriously ill with inflammatory rheumatism, from the effects of which she never fully recovered, being ever since that time in poor health and much reduced in strength from her intense sufferings. On Tuesday afternoon she was quite suddenly prostrated with congestive chills and remained in a critical condition, despite all that medical skill could suggest, until yesterday afternoon, when the physicians announced a slight change for the better and hopes were entertained that she would survive the attack. But with the approach of evening came a relapse, and at the hour named, while surrounded by a loving, grief-stricken family, her spirit took its flight.
At half-past two o'clock this afternoon the remains were followed by a large concourse of friends to the Missouri Pacific depot, and accompanied by the family on the 3:30 train to Hannibal, Mo., the home of the parents of deceased, where the funeral services take place.
Mrs. Roberts has resided in Joplin since 1873. She was a lady possessed of many noble traits of character and was held in the highest esteem by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Scores of warm friends will sadly miss her from the social circle, while the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved husband and the three motherless children in their sad and irreparable loss. She was buried after 14 June 1883 at Riverside Cemetery in Hannibal, Marion, MO.1783 Julia has reference number 409.

Roberts, partners as Porter & Roberts, plaintiffs, vs. Thomas B. Dorsey, defendant.
Now at this day come the plaintiffs, in the above entitled cause, by attorney, Galen Spencer, before the undersigned clerk of the circuit court of Jasper county, Missouri, in vacation, and file their petition and affidavit, stating among other things that the defendant, Thomas B. Dorsey, is a nonresident of this State so that the ordinary process of law cannot be served upon him. A true copy - Attest: I. C. Hodson, Clerk. By F. C. Combs, Deputy Clerk, Galen Spencer, attorney for Plaintiff
Published in the Joplin News for four weeks successively, the first insertion being on the 16th day of April, 1883, and the last insertion on the 12th day of May, 1883. Peter Schnur (publisher On 12 September 1890 he became a member of 1804 He died on 29 August 1893 at the age of 55 in Joplin, Jasper, MO.377,1391,1805,1806,1807,1808,1809 Richard was buried after 29 August 1893 in Riverside Cemetery, Hannibal, Marion, MO.1810 He has reference number 106. There were several court cases involving Richard Morris Roberts, Edward Dorsey Porter, and Gilchrist Porter in the Joplin Co courts from about 1873 to 1885. It involved non-payment of debts between them. The suit in 1883 involved Thomas Beale Dorsey (Richard's uncle) unpaid debts to Porter and Roberts. I'm less sure about the earlier case which involved John Zeigler and G W Arnold, other plaintiffs against Gilchrist Porter, E D Porter's father who had evidently invested in their (Porter and Roberts) business as well as TB Dorsey. However, both Porter and Roberts were involved in zinc mining, real estate, merchandising, so pinning down the issues is difficult - however the list of items evidently not paid for are clearly for mining - unpaid bills to be covered by the confiscation of real estate owned by TB Dorsey. This went on for years, I assume creating real strains within the family, however, I have never heard or read a word of any of this during my lifetime.
