Dean Jewett Locke (1823-1867) was born in Langdon, New Hampshire and earned his medical degree at Harvard. He worked as a teacher in his early career, then signed on as the doctor for the Boston and Newton Joint Stock Company heading for California in 1849. D J Locke and his brother founded the community of Lockeford and were very generous and civic minded indeed. He funded the school, several churches and improved the levees, roads and landscaping. He was also involved in the post office, a member of the school board and rancher. He married Delia M Hammond and they had thirteen children, each reared to regard the high importance of a good education.
NB: Josiah Gorham, father of Elizabeth Gorham, wife of Alden Hammond, was the proprietor of the hotel in Lockeford in 1867 according to the 1867 Pacific Coast Directory.
