In the 1880 Nevada census, Emma is listed as a postmistress. Research has confirmed that she was appointed by the US postal service as the first female postmaster in Nevada history on 5 January 1880. She contracted tuberculosis soon afterward and moved, with her children, to Los Angeles, CA for treatment. Henry Stimler was reappointed as postmaster on 30 Sept 1880, so she became ill within a few months of acquiring her position. (Xerox copy of microfilm images in file)

Emma, having contracted tuberculosis, moved with her children to Los Angeles in the hope of receiving treatment. Her move was announced in the Belmont Courier, 8 Jan 1881. She died the following August 13, 1881. This episode in her life was documented further by Emily K Abel who included a line about her in her book on the treatment of tuberculosis in 19th and early 20th century California. Although the details (based on earlier knowledge of Emma) have proved incorrect (eg, she was never divorced) the general information is correct and I hope she would have been pleased to have been commemorated in this book.
Tuberculosis and the Politics of Exclusion by Emily K Abel, Rutgers University Press, New Brunswick, NJ, 2007, page 115:
"Women without husbands occasionally came with other family members. Emma Campbell Norwood was a divorced mother of four children ages six to thirteen when tuberculosis struck in 1880. Her mother left the farm she had recently bought in Nevada to accompany her daughter and grandchildren to Burbank."

Tallmadge NORWOOD-47 and Emma Maline CAMPBELL-50 had the following children:
