Was appointed by Franklin Martin of Washington, DC, Chairman of the Medical Defense of San Joaquin County, and after calling two meetings succeeded in obtaining a number of volunteers for the Medical Service - Volunteered his services. Was sent to San Francisco July 14, 1918 for a very interesting course in War surgery. Remained there about four weeks. Then proceeded to Camp Lewis, Washington State, where he remained about six weeks. While there he was in charge of influenza wards. Ordered to Camp Crane, Allentown, Penn. and from there to port of embarkation. Had received over-sea orders when he was sent out to fight the influenza in Penna. He had for his territory, Pine Grove and seventeen surrounding towns where conditions were appalling. He established a hospital in Pine Grove and he and the two Lieutenants under him ran the hospital and covered the seventeen towns and Pine Grove each day - all the local MD's being victims of the disease. He used the cubical system in the hospital and obtained the best results and received the highest recommendations from the Colonel for the efficiency of the hospital and the services of the men. Sailed Nov. 3rd and land in Saint Maga ire Nov. 12th. From there he west to Le Blanc where he remained until January 14th, 1919. While there he was placed in charge of the Base Hospital and after closing the hospital was sent to the large Aviation Center Romorautin, near Gievers (pronounced Gieves). From there he was sent to the U.S. with troups by the Chief Surgeon of the American Expeditionary Forces. He was embarked for over-seas when Peace was declared and all soldiers were taken off leaving just the Doctors and nurses. He experienced the thrill of an unsuccessful torpedo attack and landed in France the day the Armistice was signed. Returned to U.S. the next spring April 1919. He served as Chief of Staff of St. Joseph's Hospital, Stockton, CA; President of the San Joaquin Medical Society, Fellow of the American Society of Surgeons; member St. John's Episcopal Church, served as vestryman for many years.
Dr. Robert Ray Hammond left last Wednesday for Kentucky, where he will be married next week to Miss Newman of Harrol's Creek in the Blue Grass state. Dr. Hammond and his bride will be at home at 643 North Hunter street after January 1, 1901
