John HAMMOND was born on 30 November 1663 in Rochester, Plymouth, MA.⁴⁹ He lived in Mattapoisett, Plymouth, MA about 1680.⁵⁰ He served in the military as Lt in command of the local militia on 20 May 1690 in Rochester, Plymouth, MA.^51,52 John died on 19 April 1749 at the age of 85 in Old Stiles, , MA.^49,53,54 There is a Preface to hthis Sermon, signed by "Jabez, Benjamin and John Hammond, in behalf of the rest" of the children of the deceased. They apologize in this Preface for publishing the Sermon, because, they say, it had not hitherto been practised, except on the death of "such who have been persons in Publick Station; though they have no reason to doubt but many persons in private life quite as much deserve such remembrance. And Mr. Hammond had "several children married and settled in distant parts and different Governments in New England; and each and sundry children." At the time of his death Mr. Hammond had lived about 55 years with is wife, who "was the daughter of the late Rev. Mr. Samuel Arnold, the first minister of Rochester. She survived her husband. He was elected as the second representative from Rochester to the Province Court in Mattapoisett, Plymouth, MA.⁵⁵ Annals, etc, p 89: John Hammond, born 30 November, 1663; died 19 April, 1749; was lieutenant in command of the military company at Rochester; served three years as selectman and assessor; was a member of the Massachusetts Assembly two years, and held a commission as Justice of the peace; married, in 1691, Mary, eldest daughter of Reverend Samuel Arnold, first minister setted at Rochester, and by her had eleven children.

John HAMMOND and Mary ARNOLD were married in 1691 in Rochester, Plymouth, MA.^49,56,57,58 Mary ARNOLD, daughter of Rev. Samuel ARNOLD, was born in May 1672.^59,60 She died on 3 August 1756 at the age of 84 in Rochester, Plymouth, MA.⁶¹ She has reference number 464.
