John L NORWOOD830 was born on 5 September 1780 in New York, NY, NY.831,832 He was christened on 7 March 1781 in First & Second Presbyterian Church, New York City, NY, NY.833 He lived in New York, NY, NY on 19 January 1805.834 John appeared in the census in 1810 in New York, NY, NY.835 He was appointed Ward Committee, Democratic Republican Party on 2 November 1826 836 In 1829/30 he was an upholsterer in Manhattan, NY, NY.837 In 1835 John was an Uphosterer at 240 Water in New York, NY, NY.838 He was appointed Vigilance Committee for 2nd Ward on 2 November 1837 839 In 1840 he was an Upholsterer at 240 Water & 26 Carmine sts in New York, NY, NY.734,840 John died on 18 January 1856 at the age of 75 in East Brooklyn, Kings, NY.841,842,843 St Nicholas Society Records, deposition of Margaret Morris Norwood, eldest daughter of Carlisle Norwood, states that "John Norwood the 5th day of September 1780, he has of late put the letter "L" to his name, now John L. Norwood."
This suggests that his middle name may have been Lester, and not Rysile (which I believe is an error and should be Riffle) as stated in the Presbyterian Church Records.

This Indenture made the 16th day of February in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty two Between James W Mott of the County of Queens in the State of New York farmer of the first part and John L Norwood of the City of New York Upholsterer of the second part Witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the rents covenants and agreements after mentioned reserved and contained on the part and behalf of said party of the second part his executors administrators and assigns to be paid kept and performed hath granted devised and to form -?- and by these presents doth grant devise and to form let unto the said party of the second part his executors administrators and assigns All that certain house and lot of ground with the buildings erected thereon known as number Two hundred and forty in Water street in the said City of New York being the same premises now in the occupation of the said John L Norwood as tenant of the said James W Mott To have and to hold the said above mentioned and described premises with the appurtenances unto the said party of the second part his executors administrators and assigns from the first day of May one thousand eight hundred and thirty two for and during the said term hereby granted the yearly rent and sum of five hundred and twenty five dollars lawful money of the United States of America in equal quarter yearly payments to wit on the first day of August November February and May in each and every of the said years Provided always nevertheless that if the yearly rent above reserved or any part thereof shall be behind or unpaid on any date of payment whereon the same ought to be paid as aforesaid or if default shall be made in any of the covenants herein contained on the part and behalf of the said party of the second part his executors administrators and assigns to be paid kept and performed therein made from thenceforth it shall and may be lawful for the said party of the first part his heirs or assigns into and upon the said demand devises and every part thereof wholly to reenter and the same to have -?- repossess and enjoy as in his or their first and former estate and to date for any rent that may remain due thereon anything herein before contained to the contrary thereof in any wise notwithstanding And the said party of the second part for himself his heirs executors and administrators doth covenant and agree to and with the said party of the first part his heirs and assigns by these presents that the said party of the second part his executors administrators or assigns shall and will yearly and every year during the said term hereby granted well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said party of the first part his heirs assigns the said yearly rent above reserved on the days and in manner limited and prescribed as aforesaid for the payment thereof without any deduction fraud or delay according to the true intent and meaning of these presents And that the said party of the second part his executors administrators and assigns shall and will at their own proper costs and charges bear pay and discharge all such taxes duties and assessments whatsoever as shall or may during the said term hereby granted be charged assessed or imposed upon the said devised premises as the common and ordinary annual expenses and assessments and that on the last day of the said term or other sooner determination of the estate hereby granted the said party of the second part his executors administrators or assigns shall and will peaceably and quietly leave surrender and yield up unto the said party of the first part his heirs or assigns all and singular the said devised premises And the said party of the first part for himself his heirs executors and administrators doth covenant and agree to and with the said party of the second part his executors administrators and assigns by these presents that the said party of the second part his executors administrators and assigns shall and may at all times during the said term hereby granted peaceably and quietly have hold and enjoy the said devised premises without any manner of let suit trouble or hindrance of or from the said party of the first part his heirs or assigns or any other person or persons whomsoever And that the said party of the second part his executors administrators and assigns covenants and agrees to keep in good condition and to make all the ordinary repairs of the said premises during the said term and to leave the premises at the end of said term in as good repair as at the commencement thereof the ordinary uses and natural decay of the premises excepted And it is further agreed that in case of the destruction of the said house and buildings by fire or other unavoidable accident during the said term that such accident be considered as a full determination of this lease and the rent shall be paid and the covenants performed prorate up to the time of such accident In Witness whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written James W Mott (LS) John L Norwood (LS) Sealed & delivered in the presence of note on the first page state that interlined and "House and" erased before execution hereof (not understood as altered as should be) John F Gonslaves It's to be understood by each party that the sum of $t00 rent is to be paid for the first year that is from the first of May 1832 until the first day of May 1833 only James W Mott State of New York City and County of New York Be it remembered that on this fifth day of June in the year one thousand eight hundred and thirty two before me personally came John F Gonsalves who being proved to me to be the same person whose name is subscribed to the foregoing lease as a subscribing witness by the oath of George W Kelso who deposed that he resides in the City of New York and the said John F Gonslaves being duly sworn says that he resides in the City of New York and was present and did see James W Mott to me known to be the same individual described in the said foregoing lease execute the same And the said James W Mott acknowledged to him that he executed the said lease as his act and deed and on the same day also appeared before me John L Norwood to me know to be the person who is described in and who has also executed the said lease and he acknowledged to me that he executed the same I allow the same to be recorded Andrew Warren Commissioner of Deeds
