Meliora NORWOOD was born before 18 July 1694 in New York, NY, NY.221,222 She was baptized on 18 July 1694 at Reformed Dutch Church in New York, NY, NY.223 She witnessed Baptism of Andrew Norwood on 15 September 1731 at Reformed Dutch Church of New York in New Amsterdam224 Meliora signed a will on 14 June 1765 in New York, NY, NY.225 Page 174; 14 June 1765:

In the name of God, Amen. I, Meliora Lewis, of New York, widow. I leave to my four grandchildren, Samuel, Benjamin, Cornelia, and Sarah Broadhurst, my whole estate, real and personal. I make my sister, Cornelia Norwood, executor. She died on 25 August 1765 at the age of 71 in New York, NY, NY.143

Meliora NORWOOD and Anthony LEWIS were married on 4 August 1726 in New York, NY, NY.226,227,228,229 Anthony LEWIS, son of Barent LEWIS and Johanna VAN DER POEL, was baptized on 1 January 1690 in Albany Co, NY.230 He was born about 1690 in Albany Co, NY.231 He was elected as freeman on 24 April 1716 in New York, NY, NY.232 Anthony owned before 14 November 1727 in New York, NY, NY.233 Recorded for Mr Samuel Lawrence the twenty third day of September anno Domini 1728

Between Anthony Lewis of the City of New York Cooper son and heir of Barent Lewis late of the said City Marr Decd & Meliora his wife of the one part and Samuel Lawrence of the said City of New York Marr of the other part Wittnesseth that the said Anthony Lewis (by & with the advice & consent of Meliora his said wife) for and in consideration of the sum of fifty five pounds curt money of New York to him paid by the said Samuel Lawrence at & before the Ensealing & Delivery of these presents the receipt Whereof he doth acknowledge & thereof & of every part and parcel thereof doth for himself his Heirs Exors & admrs & Every of them fully clearly & acc--- acquit release exonerate & discharge him the said Samuel Lawrence his Heirs Exors admrs assigns & Every of them for Ever by these presents hath Granted Bargained Sold Aliened Remised Released & Confirmed and by these presents Doth Grant Bargain Sell Alien Remise Release Confirm unto the said Samuel Lawrence his Heirs & assings for Every all that contain messuage or Dwelling house with the Lott of Ground thereunto belonging as the same now is in the possession & occupation of the said Anthony Lewis Scituate & being in Smiths Street in the East Ward of the City of New York between the house now in the tenure & occupation of William Bradford printer & the house of Doctor Jacob Moone fronting the said street and having to the North the house & Lott of the said Jacob Moone & to the South the house & Lott of the said William Bradford & in the Rear thereof the Lott of Peter Van Bruggen together with all & singular ways passages shops cellars follars gables erections & buildings Walls Yards Backsides Lights Easements profits commoditys emoluments Hereditaments & appurtenances Whatsoever to the said messuage or Dwelling house Lott of Ground & premises belonging or in any wise appertaining or therewithal used occupied or enjoyed or accepted imputed taken or know to be part parcel or member thereof or of any part thereof and the Reversion or Reversions Remainder & Remainders thereof and also all the estate right Title Interest use property possession Reversion Claim & Demand whatsoever of him the said Anthony Lewis of in or to the same or any part or parcel thereof To Have and to Hold the said messuage or Dwelling house Lott of Ground & premises with the appurtenances aforementioned & every part & parcel thereof unto him the said Samuel Lawrence his Heirs and assigns forever to the only proper use & behoof of the said Samuel Lawrence his Heirs & assigns for Ever Provided always & this present Grant is upon Condition that if the said Anthony Lewis his Heirs Exors or admrs or any or either of them doe & shall well & truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Samuel Lawrence his Exors admors or assigns the aforesaid sum of fifty five pounds with the Interest for the same that shall become due thereon & that on or before the fourteenth day of November now next ensuing the date hereof without fraud of further delay that then & from thenceforth this present Indenture & every articles Covenant & Cause and Condition in the same contained & the estate hereby granted Shall cease determine & be utterly void & of none effect any thing herein contained to the contrary thereof in any wise notwithstanding and the said Anthony Lewis for himself his Heirs Exors & admrs & every of them doth covenant promise & Grant to be with the said Samuel Lawrence his Exors admrs & assigns & to & with Every of them by these presents that he the said Anthony Lewis his Exors admrs Shall & will well truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Samuel Lawrence his Eors admtors assigns the aforesaid sum of fifty five pounds together with all the Interest that Shall be due thereon on or before His said fourteenth day of November now next Ensuing - Memorandum that on the twenty fifth day of September anno Dom one thousand seven hundred & twenty eight appeared before me Robert Lusting Esq Mayor of the City of New York & also on of the Masters of the Court of Chancery for the province of New York. John Chambers & Abraham Lodge two of the Wittnesses to the within Indenture & made oath on the holy Evangelists that they saw the within named Anthony Lewis & Meliora his wife severally sign seal & Deliver the same as their free & voluntary act & Deed to the uses therein mentioned & that Jacobus Goelet did also subscribe as witness thereto in their presence and I the said Robert Lusting having perused the same & finding no erasures or Interlineations therein Do allow the same may be Recorded Robt Lusting. Samuel BROADHURST, son of Jonathon BROADHURST and Catalyntie BENSING, was born in August 1700 in Albany Co, NY.236,237 He was baptized on 1 September 1700 at Dutch Reformed Church in Albany, Albany, NY.238 On 15 July 1723 he was a Captain, Sloop Unity in New York, NY, NY.239 Samuel was ordered to support child on 4 May 1725 in Court of General Sessions, New York City, NY, NY.240 He signed a will on 16 March 1762 in New York, NY, NY.241 Page 296:

In the name of God, Amen. I, Samuel Broadhurst, of New York, mariner. I direct all my debts to be paid. I leave to my son Samuel 5 shillings in bar of any claim as eldest son and Heir. My executors are to take care of all my estate, to bring up and educate my children, until they are of age or married, and then to divide all between my children, Samuel, Benjamin, Cornelia, and Sarah. I make my friend and brother, John Heath, executor. Dated 16 Mar 1762. Proved 10 April 1762. He died on 3 April 1762 at the age of 61 in New York, NY, NY.242,243 New York City Court Records, 1684-1760, page 38:

Samuel Broadhurst appears to answer to an order made by Francis Harrison and John Cruger, Esqrs., for maintenance of a bastard child by him begot on Meliora Norwood. 4 May 1725. He moves to have the order quashed. 4 May 1725. The order of the justices is confirmed. 3 Aug 1725. Writ of certiorari for removing said order. 3 May 1726


Social New York Under the Georges, 1714-1776, p 145:
Samuel Broadhurst is listed as a silversmith in 1725; I don't know which Samuel Broadhurst this refers to - Meliora's Samuel Broadhurst calls himself a mariner - did he do both? Can't find another Samuel Broadhurst who could have been a silversmith and freeman of New York in 1725.
